Proteins Flashcards
What are proteins?
One or more polypeptides joined together.
What are polypeptides?
Many amino acids joined together via condensation reactions and the formation of peptide bonds.
What are dipeptides?
Two amino acids are joined together by a peptide bond.
What is the structure of an amino acid?
Draw two amino acids joining together to form a dipeptide.
What are the similarities and differences between amino acids?
They all have similar structure but different R groups.
What is the primary structure of a protein?
the sequence of amino acids.
What is the secondary structure of a protein?
hydrogen bonds form between the carboxyl groups and amine groups which causes the polypeptide chain to fold into a 2D structure. This includes alpha helices and beta-pleated sheets.
What is the tertiary structure of a protein?
The structure is folded further into a 3D shape by the formation of disulfide bridges, more hydrogen bonds and ionic bonds.
How do disulfide bridges form?
Between two sulfur molecules of two cysteine amino acids.
What is the quarternary structure of a protein?
Some proteins contain more than one polypeptide chain and sometimes they contain a synthetic group.
What is the test for proteins?
Add Biuret’s solution and if it goes from blue to violet a protein is present.
