Proteins Flashcards
Proteins are build from
Long polypeptide chains (amino acid chains)
Protein structure
Amine group -NH2, side group marked R, a carboxylic group -COOH, all joined by a carbon atom
Polypeptide chain
When two or more aminoacids are linked together by a condensation reaction they form a polypeptide chain
Peptide bond
Joins amino acids in a polypeptide chain, always joints the Carbon atom of one acid and the nitrogen atom of another
insulin
a hormone that signals cells to absorb or lower glucose; the pancreas of someone with type 1 diabetes do not produce insulin
rhodospin
its a pigment that absorbs light in the retina (light-sensitive region of the eye)
collagen
makes up about 1/4 of the proteins in the human body; it’s a strong, elastic protein found in connective tissues
rubisco
an enzyme that catalyses the reaction that fixed CO2 from the atmosphere
structural function of protein
i.e help maintain cell structure - collagen
catalysis of protein
enzymes, lipids
blood clotting
fibrin
transport in blood
haemoglobin, myoglobin
functions of protein
toxins, movement, membrane transport, transport, structural, catalysis, blood clotting
packing of DNA
histones
role of condensation reaction in living organisms
it bonds amino acids and creates polypeptide chains which are an important compound of proteins; it creates a lot of large molecules of carbohydrates which are important such as cellulose or glycogen
