Carbohydrates Flashcards
A molecule
It is the smallest particle of a compound; it is formed from 2 or more atoms
Anabolic reaction
Creates macromolecules from monomers (atoms or small molecules), so in any reaction substrates have to be less complex than products
Condensation reaction
It is an anabolic reaction and it occurs when two smaller molecules combine to form a larger molecule, i.e glucose + glucose > maltose + water
Catabolic reaction
Creates smaller molecules from macromolecules (products are less complex than the substrates
Hydrolysis reaction
Hydrolysis is the splitting of a chemical body by addition of water, i.e. maltose + water > glucose + glucose
Monosaccharides
Main function is storing energy - glucose, fructose, galactose all C6H12O6
Disaccharides
Main function is transport, lactose, sucrose, maltose, all C12H22O11
Polysaccharides
Main function is also storage, cellulose, glycogen, starch - all build from di or mono saccharides
Types of lipids
Triglycerides and phospholipids
Triglycerides
Are used for long term energy storage. They are made of a glycerol backbone with tree fatty acid chains attached
Phospholipids
Make up the cell membrane
what are carbohydrates?
organic compounds such as sugar or starch, and they are used to store energy
function of lipids
They help with moving and storing energy, absorbing vitamins and making hormones.
