Proteins Flashcards
The carbon adjacent to the primary carboxylic acid group is the
Alpha carbon
How is the absolute configuration of AAs defined
As L- or D-, with reference to glyceraldehyde
What is the natural configuration of AA
L
Proteogenic
Serve as substrate for polypeptide synthesis
4 classes of AA
Proteogenic, chemical, nutritional and metabolic
Protein AA
Serve as substrates for polypeptide biosynthesis
ex. Leucine, alanine, serine
Non protein AA
Not building blocks of polypeptides
ex. Citrulline and ornithine
Conditionally essential AA
Can be made by the body, but needed to be provided when rate of use is higher than rate of synthesis
Glucogenic AA
Yield pyruvate or key intermediates of TCA that have potential to yield glucose
Ketogenic AA
Yield acetyl CoA or acetoacetyl CoA, which are precursors of ketone bodies
