Proteins Flashcards
What are proteins made from?
Amino acid chains (polypeptides)
What is the primary structure?
Sequence of amino acids
What is the secondary structure?
Folding of the polypeptide chains
What is the tertiary structure?
Further folding of the whole chain
What is the quaternary structure?
Proteins made up of 2 or more polypeptide chains
What is the biuret test?
Add biuret solution to sample
Protein is present if lilac is seen or light blue is not seen
What is chromatography?
Separate mixtures of monosaccharide or amino acids
Rf=distance from origin to solute/distance from origin to solvent front
What are enzymes?
Biological catalysts They can be reused Each enzyme has a specific shape One substrate fits one active site Enzymes combines to form an enzyme substrate complex
What is the lock and key model?
Substrate is always the exact complementary fit
What is the induced fit model?
Not complementary to begin with but when it binds it induces the enzymes structure shape
What is a non-complementary inhibitor?
It will bind with the enzyme and change the tertiary shape
What is a complementary inhibitor?
Similar shape to the enzyme so it gets in before the enzyme
