Protein Synthesis Flashcards
Transcription (Step 1)
Helicase- unzips DNA
RNA Polymerase- attach to DNA at start of sequence to be copied
RNA align with complementary DNA bases
RNA polymerase moves along DNA adding nucleotides to form mRNA strand
mRNA strand leaves nucleus and attaches to ribosome
Translation
Ribosome reads mRNA strand
tRNA molecules carry amino acids and attach them to mRNA strands to match the triplet codes on it
Complementary anticodon- codon bases align and are held together by the ribosome at the attachment site
Peptide bonds form between amino acids creating a polypeptide chain
Pre mRNA vs mRNA
Pre mRNA contains introns which are non coding sequences of DNA
These are removed during splicing so mRNA is made of exons (coding DNA)
