Protein Structure Flashcards
What is the secondary structure of amino acids?
Interactions between the R chains to form alpha helices and beta sheets.
How many amino acids are there per turn in an alpha helix?
3.6
What is amino acid tertiary structure?
Bending and folding to form 3D conformations.
Globular or spherical shape.
What are the type of interactions and bonds in tertiary structure?
Hydrophobic interactions, disulfide bonds and hydrogen bonding.
What is quartenary structure?
Multiple polypeptide units arranged with respect to each other. Held together by noncovalent means.
What kind of bonds join amino acids together?
Peptide bond between carbonyl carbon and NH3+.
What are the primary components of collagen?
Three strand molecule, small strands turn left and the big strand form right.
Proline (30%)- very stiff
Glycine (30%)- very flexible
What does the Ramachandran plot tell you?
The bond angles allowed for the alpha carbon (phi and psi).
Lower left region- right handed alpha helix common
Upper left region- beta sheets common
What are the two types of beta sheets?
Parallel and antiparallel
What is the primary structure of amino acids?
The sequence of amino acids linked together
