Protein
Is needed for rapid growth - during childhood - repair and maintenance of all body cells and tissues at all stages of life
Sources of protein
Animal- Beef, poultry, pork, fresh milk, cheese, yoghurt, eggs
Plant sources- soya products, kidney beans, lentils, chick peas, Quorn, bread, pasta rice
Fat
Provides a concentrated source of ener- insulate the body to maintain body temperature at 37C
- protects vital organs
- a diet high in saturated. Fat may lead to conorary heart disease
Too much fat may lead to obesity
Saturated fats
Butter, burgers, Sausages, bacon. , cream
Unsaturated fat
Nuts, olive oil, sunflower oil e.g flora, avocado, seeds
Carbohydrates..
Supply the body with energy. If more starch or sugar is eaten then the excess is stored as fat
Fats may lead to- obesity
Excess sugar- can lead to tooth decay+ obesity
Starch releases energy slowly
Sugar releases energy quickly
