Protein Chapter 9 + 10 Flashcards
Enzymes etc
Enzyme
An enzyme is a biological catalyst that is made of protein
Catalyst
A catalyst is a
substance that speeds up a reaction, without itself being used up in the reaction
Substrate
A substrate is the substance on which an enzyme reacts.
Product
The product is the substance(s) the enzyme forms. (Amylase + Starch = Maltose
Description of Enzymes
Enzymes are large molecules reactions are reversible. are folded into a particular 3D shape.
Anabolic enzymes
Anabolic enzymes convert simple molecules into a more complex form
DNA Ligase
used in genetic engineering, joins two pieces of DNA together.
DNA Polymerase
DNA Polymerase is an enzymes that repairs and forms DNA
Why are Enzymes involved in Photosynthesis Anabolic
Because they convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose.
Catabolic Enzymes
convert complex molecules into a simpler form
Amylase
is an enzyme that converts starch into maltose. E.g.in mouth and seed germination.
Catalase
Coverts H2O2 into H2O(l) + O2(g)
pH
Enzyme activity depends on its shape, but the shape changes when the ph changes. If pH too high or too low then the enzyme changes shape(denatured)
Temperature
- At low temperatures enzyme activity is reduced.
An increase in temperature increases enzymes activity. - Above a certain temperature, enzymes change their 3D shape
as a result the rate of the reaction falls.
