Breathing System Flashcards
Chapter 30
The muscles located between the ribs
Intercostal muscles
One Feature of each that allows for efficient Gas exchange
Structures — Alveoli - membrane wall is one cell thick, large surface area, moist surface.
Capillaries - large number of capillary network, large surface area, highly branched. Rich Blood Supply
Name the Process of Gaseous exchange takes place
Diffusion
Describe hat happens to the Diaphragm during exhalation
The (Diaphragm) it moves up
Exhalation is a passive Process what does this mean?
No energy is required
Name the Vein that leaves the lungs
Pulmonary vein
The gas that controls the rate of breathing
Carbon dioxide
What is the function of the larynx
For speech/Vocal cords
Name a disorder of the Breathing System and expand on its causes, effects etc
Asthma
1. Caused - Allergies
2. Prevented - avoid allergens
3. Treated - inhaler - bronchodoliator
Process of inhalation
1.) Intercostal muscles contract, moves ribs up + outwards.
2.) Diaphram muscle contracts, moves downwards increasing Volume of lungs.
3.) Increasing Volume creates negative pressure in the lungs
4.) air moves through breathing system to alveoli
