Protein Flashcards
Animal Products
High in iron, zine, sat. fat, cholesterol. Low in fiber
Plant Products
High in fiber, pytochemicasl, unsat. fats. Low in iron and zinc. no b12 or cholesterol
Collagen
most abundant protein in our body (25%) gives strength to tendons and ligaments.
Protein Denaturation
Agitation, Heat, Acid
Turnover rate: collegen and muscle tissue
slow
turnover rate: muscles
slow-moderate
turnover rate: organs
high
Where is all instructions for making proteins?
In the DNA (genes) in the cell nucleus
Gene expression
the process by which cells use genes to make proteins (2 ways: transc. and translation )
1 gene codes for 1 protein
Transcription
DNA to mRNA
occurs in nucleus
Translation
mRNA to protein
occurs in cytosol on a ribosome
tRNA delivers AA to ribosome
Protein functions
structural, transport, enzyme, immunity, movement, fluid blanace
Extra dietary protein….
Cannot be stored, used for an energy source, converted to glucose/fat stored for future use
Generating Energy
- Amino acid must first be deaminated (amino group removed and converted to urea for excretion by the kidneys)
- Post deamination= 2 and 3+ carbon molecules
limiting amino acids
the essetnail amino acid that is availive in the lowest conc. relative to the bodys needs
