Protein Flashcards
What is an essential amino acid?
when the body cant synthesize the protein
Non-essential amino acids do what?
amino acids can be synthesized by the body
What is a complete protein?
contains all essential amino acids. [ex] animal proteins from meat and dairy.
What is an incomplete protein?
low quality protein. [ex] plant protein from the grain, starch and vegetable roots.
Complementary proteins?
combines plant proteins so all essential amino acids are there. [`ex] rice and beans.
What is kwashiorkor?
protein deficiency in young children
What is Marasmus?
protein and calorie deficiency in young children
How much protein do adults need?
.75 grams and .8 grams
when starvation happens, what happens to the muscles?
protein from the muscle must be used to obtain energy
What study determines the protein needs?
nitrogen balance studies
When does protein nitrogen balance occurs?
during infancy, childhood, pregnancy, adolescent, people that wants to gain mass, and people that are recovering from illness
what is protease?
breaks down proteins into simple units of amino acids.
what is gastrin?
secreted in stomach to increase acidity
what is somatostatin?
secreted in small intestine to decrease acidity
1 gram of protein = how many calories?
4 calories
