Protein Flashcards
what are the elements of protein?
carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen (chon)
why is nitrogen an important element in protein?
because nitrogen is needed for the growth and repair of the body. protein is the only nutrient that contains nitrogen
what happens to amino acid chains during digestion?
during digestion, enzymes break the peptide links.
what is protein made up of?
chains of smaller units called amino acids joined by peptide links. amino acids contain chon
what is an enzyme?
an enzyme is a substance that helps a chemical reaction
how many essential amino acids are there?
there are 10 essential amino acids
what type of nutrient is protein?
protein is a macronutrient
what is high biological value (hbv) protein?
hbv protein is protein that contains all or most of the essential amino acids. it only comes from animal sources (apart from soya beans) e.g. meat, fish, eggs
what is lower biological value (lbv) protein?
lbv protein is protein that contains less of the essential amino acids. all lbv proteins come from plant sources e.g. nuts, cereals, lentils
what is the function of protein?
the main function of protein is for growth and repair of the cells, but is also needed for hormones, enzymes and antibodies
what are some of the deficiency diseases of protein?
protein deficiency diseases include poor or stunted growth, slow healing of wounds, hair breakage or loss and hormone and enzyme imbalance
