Protein Flashcards
What is proteins major roles in our bodies ?
Structural role:muscles
Metabolic role:enzymes
Transport role: haemoglobin
What is a protein?
What are they referred to as?
a large compounds comprised of smaller
sub-units called amino acids.
They are monomers which link together to form long chains
polypeptide chains
What is amino acids ?
the building blocks of Proteins
What two functional groups do proteins contain ?
amine , carboxyl
What are proteins built up from ?
LINEAR SEQUENCES OF
AMINO ACIDS
Whats the reaction between amino group and carboxyl group ?
Whats the bond formed called ?
condensation
peptide
How many naturally amino acids are there ?
How do they differ ?
What do they differ in ?
20
R group
size/acid or base/ chemical components
Whats the primary structure?
What can they differ in?
The sequence of amino acids in its polypeptide chain
The proteins differ from each
other in the variety, numbers
and orders of their constituent
amino acids
Whats the secondary structures?
The shape that the polypeptide chain forms as a
result of hydrogen bonding between different
parts of the polypeptide chain can be:
beta pleated
alpha helix
Whats the tertiary structures?
Formed by the bending and twisting by of the
polypeptide helix into a compact structure
Gives the structure a 3D shape
Maintained by DISULPHIDE , IONIC and
HYDROGEN BONDS
Whats the quaternary structure?
2 or more polypeptide chains (tertiary structures) linked together
Describe the significance of the R group?
The R group shows us the difference between each protein, the difference in sequence/size/acid or base
