Protection of the CNS Flashcards
What are the three meninges layers?
Pia mater
Arachnoid mater
Dura mater
What is the DURA MATER and what does it do?
Tough fibrous membrane
Adheres to the skull and spinal cord
What is the ARACHNOID MATER and what does it do?
Fine cobweb-like threads, joined to the pai mater
Cobweb provides space for the cerebrospinal fluid
What is the PIA MATER and what does it do?
Tissue paper thin innermost layer, CLOSE to the brain and spinal cord with lots of blood vessels
Provides blood brain barrier (BBB)
- only essential nutrients enter brain
- protects against pathogens
What is CEREBROSPINAL FLUID, where is it found, and what does it do?
Clear colourless fluid formed in blood, containing glucose, proteins, urea, salts
Found between Pia + arachnoid mater and circulates the CNS
Carries nutrients to the CNS and acts as a shock absorber when CNS hit
____ provides a hard casing for the _______ and _________
Bone, cranium, vertebrae
Where does the spinal cord extend from?
Foramen magnum
The spinal cord has ____ matter surrounded by _____ matter
Grey, white
What is grey matter?
Unmyelinated fibres
What is white matter?
Myelinated fibres
