Prosthodontics studying Flashcards
what is a saddle
the edentulous space to be restored with a partial denture. It is the part of the denture which contains the artificial teeth
Describe Kennedy Class I
bilateral free end saddles
describe kennedy class II
unilateral free end saddle
describe kennedy class III
single bounded saddle
Describe kennedy class IV
anterior bounded saddle which crosses the midline
when classifying saddles do you start posterior or anterior
posterior
what is meant by support with regards to RPDs
support is the resistance of a denture to occlusally directed load
what is Craddock Class I
tooth support - teeth provide a hard tissue resistance to occlusal loading
what is Craddock Class II
mucosa support - a large coverage will provide a resistance to occlusal loading
what is Cradock class III
tooth and mucosa - combination of hard tissue and large coverage when there are reduced number of teeth and large edentulous saddles
what teeth are the best for providing support
those with the largest root area depending on the health of the PDL - a healthy tooth can potentially carry its own load plus one and a half similar teeth
when providing rests, where should the load be transfered
down the long axis of the abutment tooth
if providing mucosal support, how many mm at least should you place the base away from the gingival margin
base should be more than 3mm away from gingival margin as it will place pressure on the margin
what components provide support?
- Rests provide support from vertical opposing forces
what are the three types of rests
- occlusal
- cingulum
- incisal
