Prosthetics and the Aged Pt Flashcards
Not everyone can wear this.
A denture
This is caused by strangeness of a new denture.
Excessive salivation
This causes lingual mandibular pain.
Overextension into the masseter area of the mandibular denture.
What does pressure over the zygomatic process indicate?
DB border of the maxillary denture base is too wide.
Causes coronoid interference.
Thick flange in the retrozygomal area.
An alternative to a remount.
Coble Balancer
Can cause generalized soreness from a denture.
1) Post-menopausal endocrine changes.
2) Nutritional deficiencies.
3) Low tissue tolerance (rule out diabetes and pemphigus).
Clearance needed between posterior denture bases distal to the last teeth in order to avoid cheek biting.
3-4 mm
Causes burning sensation on the upper lip and sides of the nose.
Impingement on the nasopalatine nerves coming out of the incisive foramen.
Can cause sore throat from a denture:
1) Over extension and ulceration of the soft palate.
2) Over extension of the hamular notch.
3) DB of max denture overextended.
4) DL of mandibular denture overextended.
5) Denture on the pterygomandibular raphe above the retromolar pad.
How does a short flange affect a maxillary denture?
Causes it to be loose.
How does a denture with long flanges look when you seat it?
The flange touches the vesitbular depth, but the denture continues to seat.
The pterygomandibular raphe can displace the denture when you do this movement.
Open wide
How to check for an incorrect posterior palatal seal.
Press on the linguals of the anterior teeth.
If the denture drops, you have a poor seal.
How do you re-make the posterior palatal seal if it’s too short?
1) Carve out the posterior palatal seal on the existing denture.
2) Put impression wax in the area.
3) Replace with acrylic.
How does a mandibular lingual flange that’s too thick affect the denture?
Tongue will lift it, and dislodge it.
You’re checking this component of the mouth when the patient lifts their tongue.
Overextension of the lingual frenum area of the denture.
You want the contacts to be on this part of the ridge for good denture occlusion.
Center of the ridge.
Too much overjet causes this.
Lisping
Can cause lisping:
1) Too much overjet
2) Not enough tongue space.
3) Palatal contour too constricted.
4) Triagnular spaces between the embrasures of max and mand teeth.
The more teeth missing, the less ___________ to the denture.
