  • inspect sacrococcygeal and perianal areas
  • one hand on each side of anus, slightly spread open and ask pt to bear down, insert finger slowly
  • examine anus, rectum, prostate, seminal vesicle and peritoneal cavity if possible
  • prostate should be nontender, rubbery
  • FOBT any stool on glove
