Male Genetalia Flashcards
3 erectile tissues of the penis
corpus spongiosum and 2 corpora cavernosa
Which erectile tissue forms the bulb of the penis?
Corpus spongiosum
expanded base of the glans>
corona
How big are the testes
4.5 cm ovoid
which of the testes lies lower?
Left
Function of the testes?
produce sperm and testosterone
What is inside the scrotum?
each has 1 testis
What is the tunica vaginalis
covers the testes except posteriorly, serous membrane
What is the function of the epididymis?
Covers testis posteriorly and laterally, storing, maturing and transporting sperm
GU tract pathway
tail of epididymis–> vas deferens–>ascends into scrotal sac as spermatic cord–>passes through external ring to abdomen and pelvis–>behind bladder meets with seminal vessicle duct–>urethra of prostate gland
Location of the inguinal canal, function
parallel and above inguinal ligament (ASIS to pubic tubercle)
-forms tunnel for vas deferens
What are the two rings of the inguinal canal?
External: exterior opening (medial)
Internal inguinal ring
What causes inguinal hernias?
loops of bowel force way through weak areas of inguinal canal
Two types of hernias
Inguinal
Femoral (femoral canal)
Two categories of male genetalia history
Sexual function
Symptoms of infection
3 questions of sexual function
- desire
- arousal (achieve, maintain erection)
- orgasm and ejection (how long does intercourse last)
postion of patient during physical exam
standing or supine
-when checking for hernias pt needs to be standing with you sitting on a stool
exam for indirect hernia
invaginate scrotum to the inguinal ring and check for protruding mass through ring
Examinating scrotal mass to determine if it’s a hernia
- have pt lie down, if it disappears, its a hernia
If it remains - listen over it, +BS in hernia
- transilluminate, red glow means it is not a hernia
MC cancer in young mean 15-25 yo
Testicular cancer
PE of varicocele
slowly collapses when pt is supine and scrotum is elevated
what is varicocele associated with
infertility
PE of spermatocele
transilluminates
-contains sperm but cannot be clinically distringuished from testicular cyst
Acute u/l testicular pain with retraction in an adolescent male due to trauma
testicular torsion
until you rule it out
Testicular torsion, treatment
surgical emergency
