• Inhibits gastric acid secretion and increases bicarbonate and mucous production in the stomach
Prostaglandin Indications
- Prevention of NSAID-induced gastric ulcers
- Treatment of duodenal ulcers

• GI effects:
- Nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, flatulence, vomiting, dyspepsia, and constipation
• CNS effects:
- Miscarriages, excessive bleeding, spotting, cramping, hypermenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, and other menstrual disorders

Hx: Allergy, lactation and pregnancy
Physical: vital signs, lesions in or mucosa or rash, orientation, affect, and reflexes, abdominal, neurological status, respiratory status (baseline)

- Diarrhea
- Risk for constipation
- Imbalanced nutrition: less than body requirements
- Ineffective sexuality pattern
- Deficient knowledge

Implementation:
• Administer to patients at high risk for NSAID-induced ulcers during the full course of NSAID therapy
• Evaluate nutritional status
• Arrange for a serum pregnancy test within 2 weeks before beginning treatment and begin therapy on the 2nd or 3rd day of the menstrual period
• Provide the patient with information regarding the associated risks of pregnancy
• Explain the risk of menstrual disorders and pain, miscarriage, and excessive bleeding
• Provide thorough patient teaching
