Antacids Therapeutic Actions
• Neutralize stomach acid by direct chemical reaction
Antacids Indications
- Symptomatic relief of upset stomach associated with hyperacidity, as well as hyperactivity
Antacids Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindications:
• Known allergy
• Pregnancy and Lactation
Caution:
• Any condition that can be exacerbated by electrolyte imbalance
• GI obstruction

• Affect the absorption of many other drugs
Antacids Adverse effects
- Relate to their effects on acid-base levels and electrolytes
- Rebound acidity
- Alkalosis
- Hypercalcemia
- Constipation or diarrhea
- Hypophosphatemia

Assess:
Hx: Allergy, lactation and pregnancy, renal dysfunction
Physical: vital signs, abdominal assessment, mucus membrane (baseline)
Labs: renal function, electrolytes

Diagnosis
Dx:
- Diarrhea
- Risk for constipation
- Imbalanced nutrition: less than body requirements
- Risk for imbalanced fluid volume
- Deficient knowledge regarding drug therapy

Implementation
Implementation:
• Other oral medications approximately 1 hour before or 2 hours after
• Chew tablets thoroughly and follow with water
• Periodic monitoring of serum electrolytes
• Assess for signs of acid–base or electrolyte imbalance
• Monitor for diarrhea or constipation
• Monitor nutritional status if diarrhea is severe or constipation leads to decreased food intake
• Provide thorough patient teaching
