Voluntary action intended to benefit others; helping behavior calculated to promote the interests of society

Antisocial beh avoir
Behavior by a person which causes, or is likely to cause ,harassment, alarm, or distress to persons not of the same household as the person
Aggression
Intentional behavior aimed at causing physical or emotional pain can be - instrumental [goal-directied] - hostile [designed to inflict pain] -physical or verbal - direct o indirect
Volence
Extreme for m of aggression that involve s the use of physical force to injure or abuse another
- violence among AAs is a fairly recent phenomenon
What is the experience of aggression and violence for African Americans since their arrival in the U.S.?
Males: beating, lynchings, murder, incarceration, police burtality
Females: rape, physical abuse
Social Learning theory
Acquiring aggressive behavior by observing others and initiating them
Social Disorganization theory
Notion that social disorganization in the neighborhood or community creates a mile in which violent or aggressive behavior will have greater likelihood of expression
Cultural theories
Notion that cultural values and experiences [racism] play on important role in the manifestation of aggressive and violent behavior
