This proportion is a summary statistic that helps describe the categorical variable for this group of adults (Lock, 2013).
Proportion = Number in that category / Total number

Example: 1) If there are 40 females in a class of 100, the proportion of females would be: 40/100, or .40.
2) If there were 50 people in a group and 10 of them were under the age of 18 the proportion would be 10/50
