The H.S is given by both the Father and the Son

- In the infancy narratives, various people are filled by the Spirit; Zacharias, Elizabeth, John, Simeon, etc. All of whom prophecy. (Male/Female)
- Jesus’ ministry preparation is marked by the coming of the Spirit “Spirit of the Lord is upon me to proclaim”
- Jesus, the Son, is the Father’s prophet
- Jesus actions are allusions to O.T prophets. Jesus is greater than all of them
- Jesus promises that the Father will do the same for His followers, but clarifies that the Spirit also comes on him
- Temple/tabernacle used to represent re-entering of God’s presence
- Passing through water is a sign of cleansing/new beginning. Those of the new beginning are baptized in the Spirit, signified by speaking/prophesying.
- Baptism is outward/so is the result of spirit baptism

The Holy Spirit is given for vocation/service

- Though the Spirit’s work is manifold, Luke focuses specifically on kingdom endeavour.
- Jesus & Believers
- conception, anointing, proclamation, miracles
- Jesus’ ascension marks the transition of His work & ministry to His disciples/church
- Jesus was powerful in word & deed
- He was unwavering & bold in Spirit
- The Acts church was powerful in word & deed
- Further, they were bold; neither the Sanhedrin nor Rome could shut them up

The work/vocation of Jesus was directed by the Spirit

- He is a prophet despite their rejection
- Other times, Jesus simply “hits upon” a scene or is humanly drawn there, or is a participant under God’s providence
- Likewise, the advance of the church was and ever should be the same (Spirit-led, Wherever present, scattered, under God’s providence)

The Holy Spirit is for all of God’s people

- Joel’s promise, and the day of Pentecost
- The Samaritan narrative, gentile narrative,
- Peter’s message: “To all who should call on the Lord”
- All in specific fulfillment of the O.T prophets:
- God will bring the anointed one, will pour His Spirit out on people, God’s Spirit will change the hearts of man
- Last aspect of OT prophecy about Spirit is echoed by Paul & John. Focus is on the vocation and the empowerment of God’s Holy Spirit
