Properties of Waves9 Flashcards
What are waves?
Waves are a way of transferring energy. Waves are caused by vibrations.
What are transverse waves?
- vibration are perpendicular to the direction of the movement of the wave
- the wave has crests and troughs
What is an example of a transverse wave?
Everything except sound, ultrasound, primary earthquake tremor
What is a longitudinal wave?
- the vibration are parallel to the direction of movement of the wave
- the wave has compressions and rarefactions
What is an example of a longitudinal wave?
sound, ultrasound, primary earthquake tremor
What is a mechanical wave?
A wave which needs a medium to travel through
What is an example of a mechanical wave?
Transverse mechanical waves-water, waves on a string, secondary earthquake tremors
Longitudinal mechanical waves-sound, ultrasound primary earthquake tremors
What is an electromagnetic wave?
Electromagnetic waves don’t need a medium to travel through. They can travel through a vacuum. All electromagnetic waves are transverse.
What is an example of an electromagnetic wave?
Radio waves, Gamma rays, Light, Ultra violet, Microwaves, X-Rays, Infra-red
What is Amplitude and what is it measured in and what is a symbol which represents it?
- Amplitude is the distance between the highest crest or trough to the rest position.
- measured in metres
- symbol=A
What is Wavelength and what is it measured in and what is a symbol which represents it?
- the length of a complete wave, one crest and trough or one compression and one rare-faction
- measured in metres
- symbol=λ
What is Frequency and what is it measured in and what is a symbol which represents it?
- the frequency is the amount of waves being produced in a second
- measure in hertz(Hz)
- symbol=f
What is Period and what is it measured in?
- the period is the amount of time it takes to complete 1 crest and trough
- measure in seconds
What is an equation to show the relationship between period and frequency?
1
Period= ————
Frequency
What is Wave Speed measured in and what is a symbol which represents it?
- measured in metres per second(m/s)
- symbol=v
