Properties of Water Test Flashcards
What does the pH scale span from?
0-14
Is 0 an acid or a base?
Acid
More acidic substances have
more H+ ions
More basic substances have
more OH- ions
The only neutral substances (PH 5)
Distilled Water
One molecule of water contains
2 atoms of hydrogen and 1 atom of oxygen
All of water’s unique properties are caused by:
water’s polarity (the uneven distribution of charge on a molecule)
Water molecules are held to other molecules by _____ bonds.
hydrogen bonds
what is cohesion?
cohesion causes water molecules to stick to each other due to hydrogen bonding
what is adhesion?!
adhesion causes water molecules to stick to other materials and surfaces.
SURFACE TENSION
cohesion causes water to have surfaces tension, which allows some insects TO WALK ON WATER
What is capillary action?
Capillary action allows water to move against gravity and flow upwards (like in plants)
Universal Solvent? - what does that mean?
Water can dissolve a wide variety of substances (excluding oil!)- b/c of its polarity and ability to form hydrogen bonds.
DENSITY
SOILD WATER IS LESS DENSE THAN LIQUID WATER B/C IT EXPANDS WHEN IT FREEZES- THIS IS DIFFERENT THAN ALMOST EVERY OTHER ELEMENT
SPECIFIC HEAT!!!!!!!!
IT TAKES A LOT OF ENERGY TO HEAT UP WATER (WATER HAS A HIGH HEAT CAPACITY)
- WATER HEATS MORE SLOWLY
- IT RETAINS HEAT LONGER
- MAINTAINS TEMP OF ORGANISMS AND THE EARTH
