Properties of Water Flashcards
1
Q
Hydrogen Bonds
A
- Form between a strongly electronegative atom and a hydrogen atom
- Not restricted to water molecules
2
Q
Properties of water
A
- Water plays a vital role in living systems as a solvent.
- Polar and ionic compounds are molecules that water dissolves
- Nonpolar molecules won’t dissolve in water
3
Q
Heat capacity
A
- Raising the temperature of liquid water takes a lot heat, because much of the heat energy is used to break the hydrogen bonds that hold liquid together.
- Energy is needed to break bonds!
4
Q
Heat of vaporization
A
- A lot of heat is required to change water from its liquid to its gaseous state (energy is needed to break bonds).
- Heat must be absorbed from the environment in contact with the water.
- Because of this, evaporation has a cooling effect on the environment, sweating cools the body (sweat absorbs some of the adjacent body heat)
5
Q
Cohesion
A
water molecules resist coming apart from one another when placed under tension.
6
Q
Surface tension
A
water molecules at the surface are hydrogen-bonded to other molecules below them, making the surface difficult to puncture.
7
Q
Adhesion
A
hydrogen bonding between liquid water molecules and the solid surfaces surrounding them.
8
Q
Water density
A
- Water is less dense as a solid\
- Liquid water has hydrogen bonds that are constantly being broken and reformed.
- Frozen water forms a crystal-like lattice whereby molecules are set at fixed distances.
