Q

Properties of Metals and non-metals? (shiny? melting points? Conductors? Density? property?)

A

Metals: Non-metals!
Shiny. Dull
high melting points. Low melting points
good conductors of Poor conductors of
electricity and heat. electricity and heat
high density. Low density

Q

What is ductile, malleable and brittle?

A

Ductile - material can be drown or pulled into wires
Malleable - can be hammered into shape
Brittle - hard but break easily

Q

What is transparent, translucent and opaque?

A

Transparent - light can pass straight through, see through it
Translucent - light can pass through but is scattered, see a blurry image
Opaque - light cannot pass through, cannot see through it

Q

What is a conductor, insulator and sonorous?

A

Conductor - allows heat or electricity to pass through
Insulator - stops heat or electricity from passing through
Sonorous - makes a ringing sound like a bell when it is hit.

Q

What is flexible, reactive and unreactive?

A

Flexible - can be bent or twisted without breaking
Reactive - have a high reactivity, they do chemical reactions
Unreactive - they do not do chemical reactions, low reactivity

Q

What is melting point, boiling point and density?

A

Melting point - the temperature at which a substance melts (solid to liquid) or freezes at (turns from liquid to solid)
Boiling point - the temperature at which a substances boils (turns from liquid to gas) or condenses at (turns from gas to liquid)
Density - the mass of 1cm3(cubed) of a substance. Density unit = g/cm3(cubed)
Water = 1g/cm3 which means that 1cm3 of water would have a mass of 1g
Density = mass divided by volume
Substances with a high density ‘feel’ heavy for their size
Substances with a low density ‘feel’ light for their size

For any material:
Higher than boiling point = gas
Higher than melting but lower than boiling = liquid
Lower than melting point = solid
