Oxidation Reactions Flashcards
Describe the rate of reaction.
How fast or slow a reaction is.
What are oxidation reactions? Give examples.
A chemical reaction when an element or compound reacts with oxygen to form an oxide.
magnesium + oxygen -> magnesium oxide
sulfer + oxygen -> sulfer oxide
Name the products formed when an elements reacts with oxygen.
The reaction between an element and oxygen results in the formation of a binary compound known as oxide.
Oxide.
What is the word and balanced symbol equation for oxidation reactions?
There are many oxidation word and symbol equations for different elements.
For example, magnesium and oxygen in the air react to produce magnesium oxide.
The word and symbol equations are:
Magnesium + oxygen -> magnesium oxide
Mg(s) + O2(g) -> MgO(s)
State whether metal oxides are acidic or basic. Why?
Metal oxides are bases because they neutralise acids.
State whether non-metal oxides are acidic or basic. Why?
Non-metal oxides are acidic because they react with oxygen to form gases. These gases present in the air and which dissolve in rain water, making it acidic.
They react with bases and neutralise them.
Describe what happens to the mass of a metal when it is heated in air/oxygen and explain why?
The mass of a metal when it is heated in oxygen increases because the extra mass came from the oxygen atoms which reacted with the iron atoms causing these atoms to be bonded to one another.
Oxidation = oxygen added
Reduction = oxygen removed
What is combustion?
The chemical reaction that takes place when something burns. Combustion is an example of an oxidation reaction.
What are reactants?
Chemical present at the start of a reaction.
What are products?
Chemical which is made in a chemical reaction .
What is corrosion?
Corrosion is the reaction between a metal and oxygen from the air.
Give a word equation and a symbol equation for combustion?
Methane + oxygen —> carbon dioxide + water
CH4(g) + O2(g) —> CO2(g) + H2O(L)
