Q

What are the properties of copper?

A

Copper is a good conductor of electricity and ideal for drawing out electrical wires because it is STRONG and BENDY
It also does not react with water

Q

What are the properties of Aluminium?

A

It is corrosion-resistant and has a low density

Pure aluminium isn’t particularly strong but it forms hard alloys

Q

What are be properties of Titanium?

A

It is also a low density metal and unlike aluminium it is VERY STRONG
It is also corrosion-resistant

Q

What is metal fatigue?

A

When stresses and strains or placed upon metals repeatedly over time and can lead to the metal breaking (very dangerous in planes - aluminium)

Q

Why are alloys harder than pure metals?

A

Alloys contain smaller elements along with the bigger sized elements, which disrupt the layers making it harder for them to slide over each other

Q

Why does pure iron need to be changed into alloys and what is the alloy called?

A

Pure iron needs to be changed into alloys because it is far too bendy, soft and brittle for other uses.
It needs to be changed into a STEEL ~ an alloy

Q

What are gold alloys used to make?

A

They are used to make jewellery, as pure gold is too soft for this use
~ metals (e.g. zinc, copper and silver are used to harden the gold)

Q

What do aluminium alloys make?

A

This makes aircraft

~ Aluminium has a low density, but it’s alloyed with small amounts of other metals which make it stronger

Q

What is copper good for and why?

A
  • plumbing ~ because it can be bent to make pipes and is below hydrogen in the reactivity series so doesn’t react with water.

16
Q

What is aluminium good for and why?

A
  • building an aeroplane ~ It is strong and can be bent into shape (when alloyed)
    It is also light
17
Q

What is titanium good for and why?

A
  • replacement hips ~ it doesn’t corrode when it comes in contact with water
It is also light and not too bendy
18
Q

Why do metals need to be protected when in contact with air and water?

A

Metals need to be protected (i.e pained) when it contact with air or water incase if the corrode, they lose their strength and hardness
