Limestone Flashcards
What is the chemical name for Limestone?
Calcium Carbonate
Describe the process of the Limestone Cycle
~ To get from Limestone to Quicklime you need to heat it and this produces Co2
~ To get from quicklime to slaked lime you need to add water (H2O)
~To get from slaked lime to lime water you need to add more water/dissolve slaked lime in water and then filter out the solution
~ To get from lime water back to limestone you need to add Carbon Dioxide (Co2)
What is the chemical formula for Calcium Carbonate?
CaCo3
What is the chemical formula for Calcium Oxide?
CaO
What is the chemical formula for Calcium Hydroxide?
Ca(OH)2
What is the chemical formula for Calcium Hydroxide Solution?
Ca(OH)
Out of the whole process if the limestone cycle, what is the only part that is an (aq) dissolved in water form?
Limewater (Calcium Hydroxide Solution)
Name 3 disadvantages of limestone
~ Huge ugly holes permanently damage the landscape
~ Quarrying processes (like blasting rocks apart) makes lots of noise and dust
~ Quarrying destroys the habitats of birds and animals
Name 3 advantages of limestone
~ It produces things that people want (e.g. Houses and roads) chemicals used in making paints, medicines also come from it)
~ acidity caused by acid rain can be neutralised using limestone
~ It provides jobs for local people, this boosts the local economy bringing in more money.
List some advantages of limestone products
~ It is widely available and cheaper that granite or marble
~ It is fairly easy to cut and shape
~ Limestone concrete doesn’t rot when it gets wet (unlike wood)
