Properties of Matter and Changes in Matter Flashcards
Some properties are common to all kinds of matter. These are called ________ properties.
basic or general properties
Matter has four basic properties:
- mass
- weight
- volume
- density
(basic property) It represents the amount of matter in an object.
Mass
(basic property) It is related to mass because it represents the force of gravity on the mass.
Weight
(basic property) It refers to the space that matter occupies.
Volume
(basic property) It represents how closely packed the amount of matter is in the space it occupies.
Density
Formula for density:
density = mass / volume
They are those properties that may be observed only in some kinds of matter.
Special or specific porperties
An object’s physical form, such as round, oblong, or irregular.
Shape
the way something feels to the skin (rough, smooth, slimy)
texture
the ability of a solid to scratch the surface of another object or to resist being scratched by another object.
hardness
a quality that is related to the light an object absorbs or reflects.
color
property of matter that makes you enjoy what you eat.
taste
the quality that often times distinguishes newly cooked food from rotten food; another word for this is “odor”.
smell
the tendency of a solid to be broken easily
brittleness
the ability of liquids and gases to flow
fluidity
the ability of some solids to be hammered into thin sheets or molded into various shapes.
malleability
a measure of coldness or warmth of an object.
temperature
the ability of matter to return to its original state after being stretched or deformed.
elasticity
the ability of some materials to be drawn into fine wires.
ductility
the ability of gases to occupy smaller spaces when the particles are subjected to higher pressure
compressibility
the tendency of some solids to take in and hold liquid; a sponge has this property
absorbency
the ability of a material to float on a liquid
buoyancy
the ability of a material to support weight or withstand an external force without breaking.
strength
the ability of a material to glow as it reflects light.
luster
the ability of a material to permit another material to flow through it
porosity
The _________ of matter are properties that can be observed or determined without changing the composition of matter.
physical properties
The __________ of matter are properties that can only be determined by causing a change in the composition of the substance being studied.
chemical properties
the ability of certain kinds of matter to burn
combustibility
the ability of matter to catch fire
flammability
