Properties of matter Flashcards
What is matter?
Anything that has mass and volume
Density’s formula
Mass/volume
What is understood by physical properties of matter and what are the subdivisions?
Anything observable, smell, taste, measure.
Intensive: they don’t depend on the amount.
Extensive: depends on the amount
Chemical properties of matter
Ability to change in composition
Conductivity
Defines a material’s ability to conduct electricity. (physical intensive).
Concentration
Abundance of a constituent divided by the total volume of a mixture (physical extensive).
Luster
Gentle shine or soft glow, specially that of a partly reflective surface (physical intensive).
Length
The linear extent in space from 1 end to the other. (physical extensive)
Volume
Amount of space a substance occupies (physical extensive).
Chemical stability
Tendency of a material to resist change or decomposition due to internal reactions, action of air, heat, light or pressure (chemical)
Flammability
Ability of a substance to burn (chemical).
Malleability
Something that can be shaped without breaking (physical intensive).
Toxicity
The action of a poison in a chemical reaction (chemical).
