Composition of matter Flashcards
Composition of matter
Can it be physically separated?
No: Pure substance——>can it be simplified chemically? No: element/Yes: compound
Yes: Mixture—->is it uniform? No:heterogenous/yes: homogenous
Solutions (homogenous mixtures)
Molecules are much smaller and tend to be semi-transparent. Ex: water.
Colloids (homogenous mixture)
There are bigger molecules. Ex: blood
Suspensios (homogenous mixtures)
Tend to have chunks, after a while it will separate. Ex: mud.
States of matter
Change of energy causes changes in states of matter.
Gas:no volume, no shape.
Liquid:volume, no shape
Solid: volume & shape.
Plasma: ionized gas, lots of energy, particles keep on crashing with each other.
BE condensate: super still, atoms appear to be fusing, “super atom”.
Tyndal effect
Particles in colloids and suspensions reflect light. Solutions don’t.
