Properties Of Matter Flashcards
Describe some examples of physical properties?
Odor
Color
Size
What is matter?
Anything that has mass or volume
State what mass is, what instrument is used to measure it, and what units are used?
Mass - the number of molecules in something, balance scale and grams
State what weight is, what instrument is used to measure it, and what units are used?
Weight - gravitational pull, spring scale and newtons & pounds
State what volume is, what instrument is used to measure it, and what units are used?
Volume - the size of an object, centimeter tape and 1 centimeter cubed or 1 milliliter
State what density is, what instrument is used to measure it, and what units are used?
Density - the amount of mass in volume,
How are mass and weight different?
Weight is the gravitational pull on an object and weight is the amount of matter in an object.
Name the three (3) states of matter?
Solid
Liquid
Gas
Describe Solid?
Definite shape, definite volume and particles do not move.
Describe Liquid?
No definite shape, definite volume and partial slide by each other.
Describe Gas?
No definite shape, no definite volume and particles move freely.
For each phase change be able to indicate if heat/energy is put in or taken out?
No answer, but know about the phases.
What is a chemical property?
The way a substance reacts with other substances.
Describe some examples of chemical property?
Flammable
Corrosion
Rust
What is a physical change and give specific examples?
When a substance keeps the same chemical property but changes form and it is also reversible.
Example: Ice Melting
What is a chemical change and give some specific examples?
When two (2) or more substances react, new substances are formed and the changes are irreversible.
Examples: Crack open and egg and fry it.
State the four (4) clues that indicate that a chemical change has taken place?
- Produces gas (bubbles)
- Gives off or takes in heat/light
- Color change
- Forms a precipitate
What is chemical reaction and give a specific example?
Any transformation from one set of chemicals into another set.
Example - Fire
Define mixture and give an example?
When two (2) or more substances are combined together.
Example - Fruit salad
Define solution and give an example?
Ingredients evenly mixed.
Example - Lemonade
Define alloys and give an example?
Mixture of two (2) or more metals.
Example - Stainless Steele
How does increasing temperature affect the rate of chemical change and give an example?
Hot air rises so when you put an open ballon over it, the ballon will rise due to the increased temperature of the air.
Example - Tire
How does decreasing temperature affect the rate of chemical change and give an example?
Cold air sinks so when you put an object in cold air it will sink, that is the chemical change.
Example - Ballon Experiment

What is a physical property?
Something that can describe an object, can be observed and measured.
