Cell Unit Flashcards
How is a compound microscope different than a magnifying glass?
The compound microscope has more than 1 lens.
What was Zacharias Jansen’s discovery? Why is it important?
He discovered the compound microscope and you could now see a whole new world.
What was Antionie van Leeuwenoek’s greatest contribution to science?
He added light to the microscope.
What was important about Robert Hooke’s discovery?
He discovered and named the cells.
What is a cell?
A cell is the smallest unit of a living thing that can perform live functions.
What is the cell theory?
A - All cells come from existing cells
B - All organisms are made up of cells
C - Cells are the basic unit of all organisms
How are cells the same?
They are the same in the nucleus, cell membrane, mitochondria and vacuoles
Define multicellular organism? Name 3 multicellular organisms?
Definition: Organisms that are made up of more than one cell.
Examples: Humans / Plants / Animals
Define unicellular organisms? Name 3 unicellular organisms?
Definition: Organisms that are made up of one cell only.
Examples: Euglena / Paramecium / Amoeba
What can a unicellular organism do?
A unicellular organism can make or take food and move.
Draw an Euglena. Write 3 things about an Euglena?
A Euglena is Unicellular / Flagellum / Lives in pond water
Draw a Paramecium. Write 3 things about a Paramecium?
A Paramecium has cilia / lives in a pond / moves quickly.
Draw an Amoeba. Write 3 things about an Amoeba?
Three things about an Amoeba are that it is false foot / surrounds food to eat / causes upset stomachs.
Name 3 organelles and describe what they do for a cell?
Nucleus - brain, control center of a cell.
Mitochondria - produces energy.
Vacuoles - makes food.
How are plant cells different from animal cells?
Plant cells have a cell wall and chloroplasts and animal cells do not.
