Properties of Matter Flashcards
Physical State
The classification of matter as a solid, liquid, or gas.
Solid
A state that has a definite shape and a definite volume.
Liquid
A state of matter that has a definite volume but does not have a definite shape.
Gas
A state of matter that does not have a definite shape or volume.
Mass
The amount of matter in an object or substance. (Grams)
Volume
The amount of space that an object or substance takes up. (Liter/Meters)
Density
A measurement that describes how mass is packed into volume. (M/V)
Property
A characteristic of a substance.
Physical Property
A property that can be observed, measured, or changed without changing the substance itself.
Magnetism
The push or pull of force produced by a magnet.
Dissolve
To spread out evenly in a liquid.
Solubility
A measure of how much of one substance will dissolve in another substance.
Insulator
A material that reduces or prevents the transfer or heat or electricity. (Plastic)
Conductor
A material that transfers heat or electricity easily. (Metal)
Matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space.
Energy
The ability to do work.
Classify
Group together based on similar traits.
Thermal Energy
Also known as Heat Energy. This is the energy of moving particles in a substance.
