Properties Of Life Flashcards
Order
Organisms are highly organized structure that consists of one or more cells. The cells can make up cell components or organelle.
Sensitivity or response to stimuli
Organisms respond to diverse stimuli. Even tiny bacteria can move forward or away from chemicals(chemotaxis) or light(photo taxis). Move towards a stimuli is positive response, while move away from stimuli is negative response.
Reproduction
Single-celled organism reproduce by first duplicating their DNA which is the genetic material & then dividing it equally as the cell prepares to divide to form two cells. The genes can passed along to an organism offspring.
Adaptation
All living organisms exhibited a “fit” to their environment. They all enhance the reproductive potential of the individual exhibiting (even those who has the ability to survive to reproduce), and it’s not constant.
Growth development
Organisms grow and develop according to specific instruction coded for by their genes. The genes provide instructions that will direct cellular growth and development so that the “young species” can grow up to have many characteristics of their parents.
Regulation
Even the smallest organisms are complex and require multiple regulatory mechanisms to coordinate internal functions, such as the transport of nutrients, response to stimuli, and coping with environmental stress.
Homeostasis
“Steady state” the ability of an organism to maintain constant internal conditions.
Energy processing
All organisms use a source of energy for their metabolic activities. Some capture their energy from the sun and converts it into chemical energy in food; others use chemical energy from molecules they take in.
