Properties of hydrocarbons Flashcards
What is the boiling point?
The temperature when a liquid turns into a gas
Why do we use hydrocarbons as fuels?
They release massive amounts of energy when we burn/combust them
Are shorter chains less or more flammable?
More flammable
Are longer chains less or more flammable?
Less flammable
If something is thick does it have low or high viscocity?
High viscosity
If something is runny does it have low or high viscocity?
Low viscocity
What is volatility?
How easily something evaporates
What is combustion the scientific word for?
Burning
For combustion to occur you need what?
Oxygen
Incomplete combustion occurs when there is not enough…
oxygen
Complete combustion produces…
carbon dioxide and water
Incomplete combustion produces…
Carbon monoxide and water
Name 3 problems with burning hydrocarbons (think about the products of combustion)
Carbon dioxide - it’s a greenhouse gas. Increasing concentrations in the atmosphere contributes to global warming
Carbon monoxide - It is a toxic gas, so adequate ventilation is important when burning fuels
Carbon - Carbon is released as soot or smoke. This reduces the amount of sunlight reaching the Earth’s surface (global dimming)
