Alkanes and crude oil Flashcards
What is crude oil?
It is a fossil fuel that contains a mixture of different compounds. We usually separate these compounds to use as petrol or diesel.
What state of matter is crude oil? (e.g, liquid, gas, solid)
It is a liquid
Where do we find crude oil?
In porous rocks
Is crude oil a finite resource or an infinite resource?
A finite resource (there is a limit to how much crude oil there is in the world and it can run out)
Describe the process of how crude oil is formed and extracted
- The dead sea creatures are buried by the sand at the bottom of the sea
- They are squashed by pressure and heat
- They turn into crude oil
- Oil rig draws out the crude oil
- It is taken to an oil refinery
What is a hydrocarbon made of
Hydrogen and carbon
What is a hydrocarbon found in crude oil?
Alkanes
What is the formula for Alkanes
C nH 2n +2 (where n is a substitute)
What is the formula for Methane?
CH4
What is the formula for Ethane?
C2H6
What is the formula for Propane?
C3H8
What is the formula for Butane?
C4H10
What does Monkeys Eat Peanut Butter stand for?
Alkanes: Methane, Ethane, Propane, Butane. (Methane has 1 carbon and Butane has 4, with the middle numhers having 2 and 3)
What series are Alkanes?
A homologous series
What is a homologues series
A series of chemicals with similar properties and the same general formula (clue homo-the same, e.g. homosexual - attracted to same sex)
