Properties of Biological Molecules I and II Flashcards
Define covalent bonds
Sharing a pair of electrons by two atoms
Define electrostatic interactions
A charged group can attract an oppositely charged group
Define hydrogen bond
a hydrogen atom covalently bonded to one electronegative atom is also attracted to another electronegative atom
Define van der Walls interactions
Results from the asymmetrical distribution of electrons in molecules or atoms (“hot spots” of positive or negative charge)
What are unsaturated fatty acids?
Unsaturated fatty acids do not have the maximum number of hydrogens bonded to carbons, at room temperature they will be liquid.
What are saturated fatty acids?
Saturated fatty acids have the maximum number of hydrogens bonded to carbons, at room temperature they are solid. The contribute more to heart disease.
