properties of alkanes Flashcards
Describe and explain the pattern of mpt/bpt in alkanes
The mpt and bpt of alkanes increases as they get bigger. This is because as the molecules increase in size, the amount of IMF’s increases, (the amount of energy needed to overcome the forces increases)
What is viscosity, and how is it related in alkanes?
Viscosity is the resistance to liquid flow (ex: thick substances like honey have a high viscosity). As the alkanes get bigger, the viscosity increases as there is more IMFs, and also, because the molecules get bigger, they intertwine.
How is volatility related in alkanes?
As the alkanes get bigger, we know they have more IMFs, and the mpt and bpt increases. This means the volatility (how easy it evaporates) decreases, because the bpt increases.
What is the colour change in alkanes as they get bigger?
Colourless -> yellow -> black
(small -> bigger -> large)
