carboxylic acids Flashcards
What group do all carboxylic acids contain?
COOH
How are carboxylic acids formed?
By oxidising an alcohol (adding oxygen to an alcohol)
What are the 2 types of oxidising agents we can use?
K₂Cr₂O₇ (Potassium Dichromate) and KMnO₄ (Potassium permaganate)
What are the colour changes between the oxidising agents?
Potassium dichromate: orange -> green
potassium permaganate: purple -> pink
Carboxylic acids are weak acids. What does this mean in terms of their H+ ions?
that carboxylic acids only partially ionise: they only release a small proportion of H+ ions in solutions, strong acids completely ionise, releasing all of their H+ ions.
What is the name of the carboxylic acid formed from ethanol + (O)?
Ethanoic acid
Carboxylic acids react the same way as inorganic acids. acid + metal = ?
Salt + hydrogen
Carboxylic acids react the same way as inorganic acids. acid + base = ?
salt + water
Carboxylic acids react the same way as inorganic acids. acid +metal carbonate = ?
salt + water + CO₂
What is the suffix for the salt formed in acid reactions?
-oate
Ex: ethanoic acid makes ethanoate
what type of reaction is between the metal and carboxylic acid when forming a salt?
displacement
in which flavoring is ethanoic acid found?
vinegar
