Properties and models of bonding Flashcards
What type of chemical bond is formed through the transfer of one or more electrons from one atom or group of atoms to another atom or group of atoms?
Ionic bond
Typically involves metals from Groups 1 & 2 combining with nonmentals from Group 16 & 17.
What compound is formed when ionic bonds are present?
Ionic compound
Ionic compounds are composed of cations and anions that have strong attraction to each other.
What chemical bond is formed through sharing of one or more pairs of electrons between 2 atoms?
Covalent bonding
Commonly occurs between non metal groups 13-17.
What is metallic bonding?
Metallic bonding is the strong, electrostatic attraction between positive ion and negative electron cloud.
This can not be represented by Lewis structure.
What determines the degree of ionic character in a covalent bond?
Electronegativity
It is an ability of an atom to attract electrons to itself
