Properties Flashcards
The sum of the addition of two or more whole numbers is always a whole number.
Whole Number + Whole Number = Whole Number
Closure Property of Addition
When we add two or more whole numbers, their sum is the same regardless of the order of the addends.
Example 1: 2 + 4 = 4 + 2 = 6
Commutative Property of Addition
When three or more numbers are added, the sum is the same regardless of the grouping of the addends.
For example (4 + 2) + 3 = (4 + 3) + 2
Associative Property of Addition
On adding zero to any number, the sum remains the original number. Adding 0 to a number does not change the value of the number.
For example, 3 + 0 = 3
Additive Identity Property
For numbers a, b, and c, (a × b) × c = a × (b × c).
Associative Property of Multiplication
For numbers a, b, and c, a × (b + c) = (a × b) + (a × c).
Distributive Property of Multiplication
When we multiply two numbers, the order doesn’t matter. For numbers a and b, a × b = b × a.
Commutative Property of Multiplication
Any number multiplied by 1, gives the same result as the number itself.
Multiplicative Identity Property
The product of any number and zero, is zero.
Zero Property of Multiplication
