Propellers - General Flashcards

1
Q

What’s rotational velocity?

A

By cutting a blade, we can see that it has the same shape as wing. The speed over this section depends on the prop RPM and where it is along the length of the blade. The tip of the section travels much faster than a section near the root.

The rotational speed is the speed at any point of that blade section.

Q

What happens with effective alpha as a propeller rotates?

A

It produces an induced flow, which will change the relative airflow over the aerofoil, moving it forward from the propeller’s plane of rotation, REDUCING the effective angle of attack

Q

When is the propeller most efficient?

A

At about 4º alpha, where it delivers the Best L/D ratio

Q

What are the forces acting on a propeller?

A

Thrust: it is the component acting in line with the propeller shaft

Drag or torque drag; component acting in line with the plane of rotation

Q

What happens on a propeller when IAS changes?

A

Both Thrust and Torque changes, as there is a change in TAS

What the Geometric Pitch?

A

Theoretical distance a propeller would advance in one revolution at zero blade angle of attack

Q

What’s the Effective Pitch?

A

It’s the distance the blade actually moves forward relative to the airflow. It’s less than geometric pitch because, in reality, we have an alpha

Q

What the Helix Angle?

A

It is the angle between the relative airflow over the blade and the plane of rotatoin

13
Q

What’s Pitch Angle?

A

Or called Blade Angle, is the angle between the blade chord line and the plane of rotation. It is fixed on simple propellers, but variable on constsant speed propellers

Pitch angle = Helix angle + alpha

14
Q

What’s the stated Pitch Angle of a complete blade?

A

It is the angle measured at a point three quarters of the way along the blade. “Reference section”

16
Q

What’s the power delivered by the engine to drive the propeller called?

A

Engine Shaft Horsepower

17
Q

What’s the propeller efficiency? How high can it be?

A

Ratio of the output of the system, THP/EHP

Can be as high as 0.8, or 80%

If EHP is constant, efficiency reaches to a maximum where THP is a maximum, (+4º alpha) and decline as speed increases further, evntually to zrero

18
Q

What’s the torque of a propeller?

A

IT is the force from the engine that is applied to the propeller shaft to turn the propeller

19
Q

What’s the power output formula?

A

Engine Power Output (EHP) = Torque x prepeller RPM (a velocity)

20
Q

If propeller efficiency is THP/EHP, then?

A

Propeller efficiency = (Thrust x TAS) / (Torque x RPM)

21
Q

What’s fine pitch? When does it give its best performance?

A

Climb propeller, it has a relatively small pitch angle. Give best performance at low speeds, in the take-off and climb

22
Q

What’s a cruise propeller?

A

Fitted if aircraft is required to have a high cruising speed.

23
Q

What’s a windmilling propeller?

A

It’s a situation where pitch angle becomes so small (as alpha becomes negative) that the direction of total reaction acts in the direction of drag. Also, a component of total raction acts in the same direction as the propeller rotation, not as before, when alpha was positive, where that component was resisting the propeller’s action, now it is helping to drive it round.
