Q

their VS them

A

There is two ways to use “Leur” and “à eux” : if you want to say “their”, or “them”.

→ If you want to say “their” :
You have to use “Leur” if you use the noun just after :
“This is their car” = “C’est leur voiture” and not “C’est la voiture à eux”
You have to use “à eux” if you DON’T use the noun in the sentence :
“It’s theirs” = “C’est à eux” and NOT “C’est leur”

→ If you want to say “them” :
You will mostly use “Leur” : “I told them” = “Je leur ai dit”.
This is not grammatically correct to say “Je l’ai dit à eux”.

pour l’appartenance, c’est la même chose ;

à qui est ce bateau ?

c’est le leur.

c’est à eux.
