Rules of Quoi

A
  • follows a preposition (de, à, sur, sous, en, pour, avec).
  • Used in slang to ask questions: Tu fais quoi?
  • used for emphasis or to seek agreement. Right? No? You know? : C’est bon, quoi?
  • NOT interchangeable with que or quel.

2 kinds:

*agree in gender and number with their antecedent.

indefinite demonstrative pronouns:
(ce (as in c’est), ceci, cela, ça)
*do not have an antecedent and their form does not vary

Replace subjects, whereas demonstrative adjectives go before a subject

Indefinite Demonstrative Pronoun
*replaces subject for all verbs

  • used with pouvoir or devoir when those verbs are not followed by être.

Ceci peut nous aider.

  • Can also be direct and indirect object pronouns:

Donnez-lui cela de ma part.
Give him this from me.

Qui a fait cela?
Who did this?

Ceci is the contraction of ce + ici (this + here), while cela is the contraction of ce + là (this + there).

Ceci is rare in spoken French. Just as là commonly replaces ici in spoken French (Je suis là > I’m here), French speakers tend to use cela to mean either “this” or “that.” Ceci only really comes into play when one wants to distinguish between this and that:

Je ne veux pas ceci, je veux cela.
I don’t want this, I want that.
