Prolonged Q - T interval Flashcards
1
Q
What is long QT syndrome?
A
inherited condition associated with delayed repolarisation of the ventricles
- important to recognise as it may lead to ventricular tachycardia / torsade de pointes and can therefore cause collapse/sudden death
2
Q
Which cardiovascular drugs can cause a prolonged QT interval?
A
- Amiadorone
- Sotalol
- Class 1 a anti arrhythmics
3
Q
Which psychiatric drugs can cause a prolonged QT interval?
A
- Tricyclic antidepressants - Amitriptyline
- SSRI - Citalopram
- Haloperidol
4
Q
Which medical conditions can cause a prolonged QT interval?
A
- Electrolyte
- hypocalcaemia / hypokalaemia / hypomagnesia - Acute MI
- Myocarditis
5
Q
Which antibiotic causes a prolonged QT interval?
A
Erythromycin
6
Q
What is ‘Torsade de Pointes’?
A
A form of polymorphic ventricuar tachycardia associated with a long QT interval
- this may deteriorate into ventricular fibrillation and hence lead to sudden death
7
Q
What is the management of Torsade de Pointes?
A
IV magnesium sulphate
