Amiodarone Flashcards
1
Q
What class of drug is Amiodorone?
A
Class III anti arrhythmic agent
2
Q
What is the main mechanism of action of Amiodorone?
A
Blocking potassium channels which inhibit repolarisation and hence prolong the action potential
- can also block sodium channels
3
Q
Which factors limit the use of amiodorone?
A
- Very long half life (20-100 days)
- Pro arrhythmic effects due to lengthening of QT interval
- Ideally given in central veins - causes thrombophlebitis
4
Q
What are the main adverse organ impacts of taking amiodorone?
A
- Thyroid dysfunction - hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism
- Lungs dysfunction - pulmonary fibrosis / pneumonitis
- Liver fibrosis - liver fibrosis / hepatitis
- Heart - bradycardia / prolonged QT interval
5
Q
Skin /surface related adverse impacts of taking amiodorone?
A
- Corneal deposits
- ‘Slate-grey appearance’
- Photosensitivity
- Thrombophlebitis and injection site reaction
- Peripheral neuropathy
6
Q
How are patients who take amiodorone monitored?
A
- TFT, LFT, U + E, CXR prior to treatment
